Telegram proxy: a French mobile IP inside the app

Setting a SOCKS5 proxy in Telegram, on desktop and on mobile: what it really changes, and the phone number trap for an account you keep.

update Updated

Telegram is one of the few apps that accept a SOCKS5 proxy in their own settings. No software to install, no tunnel: the address, the port, the username and the password, and the app goes out through your French mobile IP.

When a proxy is useful

A network that filters Telegram. Some public Wi-Fi networks, some hotels, some countries block or slow down the app. The proxy sends the traffic through an ordinary French mobile line.

Separating a professional activity from your personal connection. You run a channel, a community group or customer support: that account can go out through its own address, and stop sharing your home router's address with your personal account. This is the principle explained in Compartmentalizing what you do.

Avoiding a hosting or shared VPN address. A connection coming from a datacenter range or a consumer VPN inherits whatever others did with the same address. A dedicated mobile line takes you out of that group: see Collective punishment.

When it is useless

Let us be clear, so that you do not pay for nothing.

  • Hiding your address from other users: in messages, Telegram does not show it to them. Only calls can go peer-to-peer and expose it to the person you are talking to. The calls privacy setting lets you turn peer-to-peer off, for free, with no proxy at all.
  • Being anonymous towards Telegram: your account is tied to a phone number. A proxy changes nothing about that link.
  • Getting past a block now and then: Telegram lists free MTProto proxies. They are shared and slower, but for occasional use, they are the right tool.

The dedicated proxy is worth its price when you need an address that is stable, French and yours, day after day.

Setting up the proxy

The addresses and credentials are in My proxies, on the proxy's page. Use the SOCKS5 port.

On desktop (Telegram Desktop): Settings → Advanced → Connection type → Use custom proxy. Choose SOCKS5, then fill in the host, the port, the username and the password.

On Android and iPhone: Settings → Data and Storage → Proxy → Add Proxy → SOCKS5, with the same information.

Labels move from one version to the next; the path stays the same. Telegram then shows the proxy's status (connected or not) in the same window.

Before looking for a fault in Telegram, check the proxy in a browser: see Testing your proxy.

Calls

Voice and video go over UDP. A SOCKS5 proxy without UDP relay carries messages but not necessarily calls. Two solutions: the proxy's UDP option, chosen when ordering, or the WireGuard tunnel, which sends all of the device's traffic out, calls included.

The phone number trap

The proxy comes with a number that receives SMS. It is tempting to validate a Telegram account with it. Before doing so, know this:

The number follows the SIM card, not you. If the proxy changes hands or the SIM is replaced, so does the number. And Telegram sends its login codes to that number: whoever holds it next can request one.

If you do it anyway:

  1. Turn on two-step verification right away (Settings → Privacy and Security), with a password and a recovery email. Without that password, a code received by SMS is no longer enough to open the account.
  2. For an account you intend to keep for years, use a number of your own.

The details are in Receiving SMS.

Which plan

Telegram uses little data, unless you exchange a lot of videos. A stable address is enough: changing IP brings nothing here.

Use What fits
Messages, channels, groups Essential: a fixed IPv4, at the lowest cost
Lots of media A plan with unlimited data, so you do not have to watch the quota
Calls through the proxy The UDP option, or the WireGuard tunnel

FAQ

Can I set a different proxy for each Telegram account?

Not in the same app: the proxy is set for the whole app, and every account open in it goes out through it. For two accounts on two addresses, you need two devices, or two separate installations.

HTTP or SOCKS5?

SOCKS5. Telegram Desktop also accepts HTTP, but the Android and iPhone apps only offer SOCKS5 and MTProto. See HTTP or SOCKS5?.

Can Telegram see that I am using a proxy?

It sees a French mobile address, that of a carrier where thousands of subscribers go out through the same ranges. It does not see the name of your proxy provider. But none of this exempts you from its rules: an account that breaks them can still be sanctioned, whatever its address.
